Former Tolland County residents Carlos Rivera and Taina Rivera, both age 43, of Vernon, were sentenced to 20 years a piece in prison in what prosecutors called a series of "horrific" assaults, the Connecticut Department of Justice said.

The abuse lasted for years for the two underage victims, authorities, the prosecutor said.

The two minor victims were 13 when the abuse began, authorities said. A boy told police he was first assaulted in 2017, and the abuse lasted for two years.

The Riveras abused a 13-year-old girl from 2020 through 2021, the prosecutor said.

The Riveras pleaded guilty to the abuses in July, the prosecutor said. Tania's sentence will be suspended after 12 years, and she must register as a sex offender for 10 years after that.

Charles' sentence will be suspended after 14 years, but he will be required to register as a sexual offender, officials said.
